IBPS CSA-XVI 2026: choose the state before you chase the vacancy count

CRP CSA-XVI is the common recruitment process for Customer Service Associate posts in participating public-sector banks for vacancies of 2027–28. The large vacancy total makes the notification attractive, but the most important application decision appears before the examination: a candidate can apply for vacancies in only one State or Union Territory. That choice connects the vacancy table, the selected local language, examination centres and eventual allotment.

This explainer is based on the official 74-page notification, the live registration portal and the current AvsarIQ opportunity record. It does not decide individual eligibility or predict an allotment. The notification and any later IBPS notice remain authoritative.

The notification says candidates may apply for vacancies in any one State or UT only. It also says that, depending on operational requirements, a candidate may be allotted an examination centre outside the chosen State or UT. In other words, the state selection defines the vacancy pool and language obligation; it does not promise every exam stage will happen inside that geography.

Start by reading the complete State/UT annexure, not a national total copied into a headline. The annexure distributes indicative vacancies bank by bank and category by category. Some banks show numbers in one state and “NR” where vacancies were not reported. The national figure of 11,403 comes from adding the 37 State/UT total rows in the official annexure. Those numbers can change because participating banks may report actual requirements later. A sensible choice weighs the relevant state total, category row, language readiness and willingness to work there—not just the single largest number.

The basic educational qualification is a degree in any discipline from a recognised university or an equivalent qualification recognised by the Central Government. The candidate must possess a valid marksheet or degree certificate on the day of registration and enter the graduation percentage. The final result must have been declared on or before 21 August 2026, and documentary proof of that declaration date is required later.

Computer literacy is mandatory. The notification describes this as operating and working knowledge supported by a certificate, diploma or degree in computer operations or language, or by having studied Computer or Information Technology as a subject in school, college or an institute. That supporting route should be identified before registration rather than improvised at document verification.

Age is measured as on 1 August 2026: the general range is 20 to 28 years, with the notification defining the ordinary birth-date window as 2 August 1998 through 1 August 2006, both dates inclusive. It then lists category-specific relaxations. Applicants relying on a relaxation should match the exact category, certificate format and applicable clause instead of subtracting years from the upper limit informally.

For the chosen State/UT, candidates should be proficient in reading, writing, speaking and understanding the specified or opted local language. The application asks for one language from the relevant Annexure III list. A candidate who produces a class 10 or higher marksheet or certificate showing that language was studied does not have to take the Local Language Proficiency Test. Others face the test after qualifying the main examination or provisional allotment but before joining.

The test is qualifying, yet it is not optional: the notification says failure means no appointment. This is why choosing a state solely for a larger vacancy number can be a poor trade. Before registration, find the precise language options for that state, locate the certificate that could establish study of the language, and make an honest assessment of all four abilities. Passing an objective banking exam does not substitute for the language condition.

The preliminary examination contains 30 English Language questions, 35 Numerical Ability questions and 35 Reasoning Ability questions. Each section receives 20 minutes. Candidates must clear cutoffs in each test, after which IBPS shortlists an adequate number for the main examination.

The main examination broadens the emphasis: 40 General or Financial Awareness questions worth 50 marks, 40 General English questions worth 40 marks, 40 Reasoning Ability questions worth 60 marks and 40 Quantitative Aptitude questions worth 50 marks. Each test is separately timed, for 125 minutes overall. The notification says main-exam marks—not preliminary marks—are used for provisional allotment, with the 200 main-exam marks converted to a score out of 100. That makes prelim preparation a qualifying gateway and main preparation the ranking task.

Online registration and fee payment run from 1 August through 21 August 2026. The official application portal separately confirms that registration, editing and online fee payment close on 21 August, with application printing available later. The notification lists ₹175 inclusive of GST for SC, ST, PwBD, ESM and DESM candidates, and ₹850 inclusive of GST for all others; bank transaction charges are extra.

IBPS has also announced a two-day correction window after registration closes, with the exact schedule to be notified on its official website. That window is not a reason to submit uncertain state, category or qualification data. Some choices and claims have consequences beyond a typographical correction, and the notification controls what may be changed. Complete the form carefully, keep the payment receipt, and download the final application.

The official portal warns that submission does not itself prove a candidate satisfies the notification. Applications remain subject to scrutiny and can be rejected if a condition is not met. That warning is useful: the registration form records claims; it does not validate every claim in real time.
